Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman attended the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians in Mexico City from March 14 to 15, 2025. The event brought together around 380 parliamentarians from 56 countries to discuss strategies for achieving gender parity in legislative bodies worldwide.
In a social media post, Roman expressed pride in representing the Philippines at the conference, emphasizing the need for real change in global gender equality. She was joined by Congresswoman Ann Matibag and thanked Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Lilybeth Deapera for the warm welcome. Roman highlighted the importance of exchanging insights with other women leaders to further the cause of women’s empowerment.
The conference focused on achieving equal representation of women and men in parliaments, ensuring not only numerical balance but also equal influence in policymaking. Participants called for reforms such as gender quotas, equitable distribution of campaign resources, and stronger policies against sexism and harassment. A proposed plan of action aimed at accelerating gender parity in governance was introduced. Mexico’s success in attaining equal representation in decision-making positions was showcased as a model for other nations.
The IPU committed to promoting the conference’s recommendations and encouraging parliaments worldwide to adopt concrete measures to close the gender gap in politics. Roman’s participation aligns with her longstanding advocacy for gender equality in the Philippines. Earlier this month, she spoke on key women’s rights issues, including the Divorce Bill and Family Code reforms. She reaffirmed her commitment to pushing for policies that empower women and promote fairness in society.
